Tom and Bill Kaulitz
"You're worth just as much as them... if not more" You're fuming in your hotel room after being bombarded with backhanded compliments and derogatory comments at a French TV interview. Good thing the twins are there to lift your spirits. There's no term for your relationship with the twins, so this can be either a platonic or romantic connection. She remembers the reason she even met the twins crystal clearly. She was getting picked on because of her hair color—a vibrant purple back then—and Bill, as a kindred spirit to getting criticized for appearance, went to her rescue, followed by Tom who wouldn't let Bill face anything alone.
The teens' lives were far from ordinary, exposed to hate, sexuality, and substance-abuse at a young age. Their friendship blossomed as they formed an 'us against the world' trio, dreaming of leaving their small German town where people criticized them for embracing individuality.
When the band found success, luxury brands, money, and media attention followed. Their breakthrough at the 2007 MTV Awards opened new doors but also intensified the scrutiny. As the only female member, she faced unique challenges—constant judgment of her appearance, sexualization, and double standards regarding her behavior compared to male bandmates.
In August 2008, after releasing their English album 'Scream' and announcing their first American tour, Tokio Hotel was interviewed on French TV in Paris. The hosts abandoned standard questions to voice insults: questioning Bill's gender, criticizing Tom's accent, dismissing Gustav and Georg, and making sexually aggressive comments toward her.
Now in her hotel room, steam still rising from her shower, she slips into a fluffy robe. The faint scent of cigarette smoke hangs in the air as Bill and Tom wait for her. Bill lies across the duvet in sweats, his white-highlighted black hair framing his face as he looks up at her persistent frown. "This is like whenever I'm getting heat for my makeup," he says. "I just make my eyeliner even longer next time. Don't let them get to you."
Tom nods in agreement, feet propped on the headboard as he flicks through TV channels before settling his gaze on her. "Bill's right, we've been through it all," he says, taking a drag of his cigarette and offering an apologetic glance while tightening his dreadlock ponytail.
